I figured with all these knowledgable posters here, one of you would surley know one Irish super type person. The only one I can think of is the odd Jack O'Latern with the Global Guardians. Please don't tell me Jack and some sterotyped cops are the only Irishmen in comicdom... Thanks, IP: Logged |

Marvel had Banshee, a male mutant with sonic cry powers, who was one of the original New X-Men. IP: Logged |

Banshee was Irish, as was his daughter, Siren. Marvel also had a female Irish super-hero in Contest of Champions, whose name I believe was Shamrock. When did mick stop being an ethnic slur? IP: Logged |

Remember the Mike Myers sketch on SNL where he used to play the proprietor of a Scotish giftshop? The one where he used to say, "If it ain't Scotish, it's crap!" He used to get upset with people who confused Ireland with Scotland all the time. It's a good thing that he's not reading this thread. :P IP: Logged |

<<Banshee was a Scot though wasn't he? Not that there's much difference>> Them's fightin' words!!! : ) You might be confused because he later dated (did they ever marry?) Moira MacTaggert, and they resided on Muir Island, Scotland. IP: Logged |

"Please don't tell me Jack and some sterotyped cops are the only Irishmen in comicdom" Well, the FIRST Irish character that comes to my mind, of course, is Gotham City's own Chief O'Hara. I've never seen him in the comic-books, but I did see him in the 60's newspaper strip. "Banshee was a Scot though wasn't he? Not that there's much difference" My Dad used to play "ethnic Irish music" on the weekends, often for "fundraisers". A common first question, as so many people at these tended to be "right off the boat", was "So tell me, what COUNTY are ye from?" Most of these people could correctly identify WHICH county in Ireland someone was from, just by their accent! GOD FORBID somebody would dare to play a SCOTTISH song at one of these functions-- it might start a riot akin to the bottle-throwing scene in THE BLUES BROTHERS. "What are ye playin' that SCOTTISH TRASH for??" The regular band my Dad played in for a few years was often complimented on being "the best Irish music we've ever heard", patrons said on occasion. Nobody in the band told the customers, of course, that the 3 guys in the band were English, Scottish, and-- POLISH! "It's still an ethnic slur unless the person using it is Irish. Kinda like black folks and the N-word." Which is exactly why, in MY neighborhood, I avoid the "N" word at all costs-- preferring the "A" word, the "B" words, the "SOB" word, the "MF" word, or simply go with "stupid brain-damaged idiot" and other colorful metaphors. (Ususually, it's safer to insult a person's lack of intelligence than their race-- not that it stops them from doing it, OR, incredidbly, being offended for being called EXACTLY what they are...)
